Well, in a sense, Ozcat is a very real station-our deejays don't pre-record their shows and our music is not pre-programmed. We feel that live radio is about as real as it gets.
If you mean "real" as in a viable FM station, yes, Ozcat will continue our endeavors to persuade the FCC to allow us to broadcast on the FM dial.
We are currently filing an Application for a Full-power Non-Commercial FM License during a special filing window the FCC has opened from October 12th through the 18th, 2007. This is the first such window opportunity since the year 2000. The proposed station will be at 89.5, a tiny sliver of a spot on the FM dial that has proper clearance of other stations. We will be applying for a 100 Watt station to cover most of our community.
We have received invaluable assistance towards this end from Jeff Shaw and Todd Urick of Common Frequency. They are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit "dedicated to providing information about non-commercial radio broadcasting within the United States to the public, with the aim of facilitating more public involvement in non-commercial radio." We cannot thank them enough for their support
2.What's the Mission of Ozcat Entertainment?
Our three-fold mission is to:
A. To prepare and promote local and independent artists and technicians
in the field of popular arts and entertainment
B. To foster Vallejo's entertainment history and heritage
by highlighting community arts and entertainment
C. To bolster community spirit and awareness by supporting
other local non-profits
3.What's the Significance of the Name, "Ozcat"?
The name "Ozcat" came from the preface to "The Lost Princess of Oz" by L. Frank Baum (yes, there were further trips to Oz after Dorothy's first visit. Baum signed his letter to his readers, "Ozcat at Hollywood in California". We supposed Baum was calling himself an Ozcat because he was a cool cat making movies in glamorous Hollywood.
Ironically, we later discovered that we had misread the original preface. Baum had signed it "Ozcot" not "Ozcat". It turns out Ozcot was Baum's beloved home (a play on the name "Ascot") in Hollywoood, California. In those days, Hollywood was a burgeoning suburd of LA with no inkling that it would become the entertainment capital of the world. Back then, Baum loved Hollywood for the small village it was--a place for people to work and live harmoniously.
At any rate, we kept it "Ozcat", a name with a nod to The Wizard of Oz" and a little "cool catness"
4. What is Legal Part-15 AM Radio?
Ozcat broadcasts to a small portion of greater downtown Vallejo via our Part-15 1-watt legal unlicensed low-power AM antenna at 1670 AM. We are planning to purchase additional antennae to build a legal network in our town. This is an exciting new technology with a great deal of potential for community radio.
